EIGHTEEN

VASILI MARKOV

Yaelle placed the phone call to Black’s office. I was very proud of my mate for pushing aside her fears and acting.

Tonight, we were meeting at the Packhouse to discuss the approach to the Coven Leader. Yaelle and I had been directed to a sitting room on the first floor. There, Theo was behind the bar, welcoming us with a smile.

“Pick your poison.” She raised her eyebrows expectantly.

Yaelle moved toward the Queen. “Why are you serving poison?”

Theo’s response was a dramatic eye-roll. “I’m not. It’s a saying.”

I didn’t understand, but I followed my mate. “I will drink a beer.”

“Excellent.” She bent over and pulled out a frosty bottle.

“Do you have wine?” Yaelle asked.

“Of course.”

After Yaelle made her selection, Theo poured and handed the stemmed glass to my mate. “I must say, I was surprised you asked for this meeting.”

“Do you think we are making a mistake?” Yaelle asked quickly.

Theo stepped from behind the bar and led us to a large sofa. “Make yourselves comfortable.”

Yaelle chose to sit very close to me.

“To answer your question, I think gathering as much information as possible is always good. I like Alice Whiteraven very much. She has proven to be trustworthy.”

“Good.” I nodded.

“I thought it would take at least a year,” Theo glanced at Yaelle, “for you to trust us enough to ask for our help.”

“Oh.” Yaelle’s body stiffened for a moment, but she recovered quickly.

Theo smiled slowly. “It’s okay to want us to earn your trust. After everything…I can’t imagine how difficult it is to trust others.”

“It isn’t easy,” Yaelle murmured, “but when I told you my history…I could not only see but also feel your outrage and anger.”

“Black knew nothing of the lab. Neither did Lore or Sarita. I swear that to you.” Theo placed her palm over her heart.

Yaelle took a sip of wine. “I changed my mind when I saw how upset Addie was. We can’t control what other people think, and I don’t want her to deal with the bullying if she doesn’t have to. I don’t want her to be upset.”

Theo smiled a little. “I know this is very difficult…trusting others while facing the unknown. You aren’t alone. I’m with you no matter what you decide. If you say to pause this exploration, then it's paused.”

Alexi and Charley entered the room, followed by Kelly.

The redheaded witch walked directly to the bar. “I’ll handle things.”

“Don’t tell me; you know how to bartend.” Charley followed Kelly.

“I know how to do many things.” The witch smiled mysteriously as she walked behind the bar. “There was a guy…” She flashed an arrogant smile.

“Why am I not surprised?” Charley responded.

Lore and Bayla entered the room, followed closely by Solle, Conal, and Black.

We rose to greet the Packleader. “Laird,” was murmured.

Black waved his hand dismissively. “Relax.” He then looked toward the bar. “Kelly’s setting us up?”

Theo shrugged. “Another of her talents.”

After everyone had drinks and had chosen seats, Black began, “Yaelle would like to approach Alice Whiteraven regarding her daughter.”

“Our niece,” Alexi added quietly.
